Taiwang Sea

Martin Eden

The Pacific Ocean forms the distant western edge of the Indian-summer landscape, its cloud-darkened horizon bringing a first warning of winter to an otherwise still scene.

Setting

Beyond the Golden Gate, the Pacific Ocean is described as dim and vast. Its horizon carries tumbled masses of cloud, in contrast to the bay’s metallic sheen and the motionless or slowly drifting sailing craft nearer shore.

Narrative Significance

The approaching clouds give the calm autumn day a changeable edge: they sweep landward and announce the first blustering breath of winter. The ocean thus marks both the scale of the landscape beyond the bay and the season’s coming transition.
